 Ever wondered what it's like to open all four of Alameda's bridges? Have you seen all of Alameda by boat? Do you like Bloody Marys? RSVP below to join us! 'Round the Island is an annual New Year's Day boat parade to celebrate the new year! Alameda yacht clubs - Island, Aeolian, Ballena Bay, Encinal and Oakland - are welcoming boaters to enjoy Sunday brunch at their clubs. RSVP below. Yes, we're welcoming you to our floating clubhouse for-a-day - the Laguna Verde service ship at Alameda Marina! The Laguna Verde is at Alameda Marina (1815 Clement), at the end of Dock 6. From 9am to 4pm, we'll be serving coffee and donuts for people who boat or "blacktop" in. Cash and card accepted. From 4pm to 9pm, we'll be hosting our after party at Laguna Verde! Please RSVP below. For visiting boaters: Side ties at Dock 5 and the end-tie at Dock 7 are AVAILABLE. Please hail us on VHF channel 72.  ** A special holiday webinar for Island Yacht Club members and friends ** Join IYC sailor Alan Hebert on a tour of summer sailing in the west of Scotland. Get a sneak peak at the Western Isles, the Caledonian Canal, and racing on the Clyde in "classic plastic" yachts with the Holy Loch Sailing Club. Also joining us are Longtime Scottish cruisers and racers, Bob and Rowena Donaldsen, to tell us about their cruise down the Caledonian Canal, from Inverness to Fort William. Yes, you can Canal Cruise in Scotland! Bob and Rowena are also longtime stalwarts in the Piper One Design Class and will share insights into racing on the Clyde. December 9 update from Alan:
We will be joined by my friends Bob and Rowena Donaldson, who live in Scotland, on December 20th.. Bob and Rowena are mainstays of both the Holy Loch Sailing Club in Sandbank, Scotland and the Piper One Design Association. Their current boat is an Elizabethan 29, which is quite like a Pearson Triton or an Alberg 30. IYC sailors will get a first look at my Piper this coming weekend (assuming that the thunderstorms don't materialize) at our IYC midwinters race. On Rowena's invitation, my wife and I traveled back to Scotland and raced in the Piper Class National Championships this past August. Bob and Rowena will be talking about their cruise down the Caledonian Canal. The canal runs the length of the Great Glen in the highlands, linking Loch Ness with Loch Linnhe. I've driven the length of the Great Glen and driven many miles alongside both Loch Linnhe and Loch Ness, but never been on the canal more than a few moments to look at one of the locks that transfer the water. I'm looking forward to seeing their photos. One third of the talk will outline my "Dream Cruise" of the lower Western Isles. This cruise is pretty typical for a 1 week to ten-day excursion up the Western Isles. I have boated on some of it, driven alongside some of it, hiked around some of it, and daydreamed about all of it! We'll finish up with a review of the Holy Loch Sailing Club and the Piper National Championships, with lots of photos of these Scottish plastic classics. Alan  The David Buoy living up to its name! We had a beautiful, breezy day on Sunday with sunny skies and about 10 knots coming right down the Estuary. The Race Committee used courses 8, 8, 7, 5 and 5 so that all boats had a two lap course, and everyone would finish at roughly the same time. In practice, boats finished in 60 to 90 minutes. Twenty-five of our 31 entrants came out to race, with all eight of the class A boats racing. Being first in an eight boat class is never easy, but Good and Plenty won with a corrected time 93 seconds ahead of their nearest competitor, Wile E Coyote. In class B we had five of the six entries come out, with Loose Cannon in first place. In class C we had four of the five entries start, with Carina in first place. In class D, we had four of the eight entered boats start, and Puff Mommy took first place. In class E, all four of the four registered boats competed, with Anemone winning. Full results are on Jibeset. As usual, the race was followed by socializing and prizes at the Boathouse. Of course a race does not just happen, and we’d like to thank all the volunteers. Especially the new markset crew. They arrived at 10 AM to put the buoys in place, and then spent the day practicing with our new “big” marks, before picking everything up and putting the boat away. Look for the red tent! 🎪 We will be offering David Buoy rides for those interested in markset! ⚡️🟠 Don't forget that IYC Island Days starts Sunday, Nov 13. So, this is a great chance to plug into our community and learn about how we all contribute to making Estuary racing super-fun and welcoming.
