About the Shared Boat Program
Island Yacht Club's Shared Boat Program includes:
Island Yacht Club’s Shared Boat Program (“SBP”) offers IYC members affordable access to the club’s 1967 Santana 22, Island Girl 2. This 22ft keel boat was lovingly-restored by our volunteer members, and provides a great opportunity to enjoy time on the water and advance your sailing skills. We recommend contacting us for an informal sail with one of our members before scheduling a checkout sail.
Island Girl 2’s berth is at Alameda Marina on the Oakland/Alameda Estuary, and can be reserved by members via a shared calendar on a first-come, first-served basis.
We don’t expect members to be expert sailors. However, at a minimum you must be able to operate a small keelboat as a Skipper with a Qualified First Mate to assist. The SBP does not include training or accreditation, but we’d be happy to recommend local ASA- and US Sailing-accredited schools.
Island Yacht Club's Shared Boat Program includes:
- A beautiful Santana 22, with lines and rigging in great condition
- "All you can sail" access, including an online calendar system for booking up to 2 weeks in advance
- All maintenance, slip fees and regular bottom cleaning (every 8 - 12 weeks)
- Communication with other shared boat program members via our email group
- An amazing community of Island Yacht Club sailors, who meet regularly for racing and social events

Cost
The SBP Membership Fee is in addition to the IYC Annual Membership Fee. IYC Membership is $100 per year, and is valid for the calendar year (Jan 1 through Dec 31). SBP Membership is $50 a month, or $500 per year, beginning on the date the fee is paid and ending one month / year respectively from that date OR if IYC Membership expires.
Requirements
SBP Members must be current IYC Members and meet certain skill-level requirements before they are permitted to check out the boat as a Skipper. Skippers must also have a Qualified First Mate crewing with them on every sail.
Prospective SBP Members will be taken on a brief check-out sail, which will cover:

Equipment Requirements
Limitations on Use
The SBP is for cruising and educational purposes only. Under no circumstances should Island Girl 2 be used for racing.
Island Girl 2 must remain within the Oakland Alameda Estuary, and be returned to the slip by nightfall. Depending on the experience of the skipper and their history within the program, the SBP Manager may approve requests to extend the distance and time limits on a case-by-case basis.
Ship’s Log and Maintenance
A simple form with a checklist is provided which serves as a to-do list for the skipper and crew to follow before and after sailing. All skippers must perform the routine tasks and check them off on the form, take a photo of the form, and send the photo to [email protected] after every sail.
This is a volunteer-run program, so the simple step of completing the checklist allows us to keep track of any issues and make sure our boat is kept in great condition for the next crew to use.
