ISLAND YACHT CLUB

Volunteer with us

Island Yacht Club has been an all-volunteer club for 50 years. We rely on the skill and energy of our members to maintain our year-round sailboat regattas, educational events and Women's Sailing Seminar. Please help us build our club, while learning new skills, meeting fellow members and contributing to our strong, year-round sailing programs.

Please browse our open roles below - and if interested, get in touch with us.

Race committee

No previous experience required - simply turn up on race day!

Most sailboat racing is run by yacht clubs and other local sailing organizations. Island Yacht Club - like many clubs - relies entirely on volunteers to provide our race management.
By joining our race committee, you will be paired with our experienced team, where you will learn - or contribute to - a variety of roles, including:
  • Mark setter (bring a lifejacket!)
  • Wind reader
  • Spotter/Recorder
  • Signaller (flags)
  • Sounder (sound signals)
  • Line sighter
  • Scorer
  • Timer
  • Digital forms / Jibeset.net coordinator

Read US Sailing's "Join the Race Committee" to learn more about these roles. An understanding of the Racing Rules of Sailing: 2021-2024 is useful, but not necessary. You will be reporting to our Principal Race Officer (PRO), Thom Mantooth.

This is an in-person role. Due to social distancing requirements on our race deck, you will be asked to wear a mask, be flexible - and switch quickly between tasks!

Requirements
  • Availability to work on Friday evenings (5:30pm to 8:30pm) on our Alameda Marina race deck (500 dock) during the spring/summer.
  • Readiness to take on a number of roles - and not be afraid to ask questions!
  • A cool head - and sense of humor when things go sideways - is always valued.
