Fair winds to our dear members who have recently sailed away.
Our friend Alice Watts passed peacefully on Friday, February 16, 2024.
We knew her best as an exceptional sailor and educator, but Alice's family came first and foremost in her life. She loved talking up her husband Bob, their sons, partners, and grandchildren, and sharing their successes.
When she was on the water, Alice was an amazing instructor, sailor and crewmate. The many, many people who have sailed with her or been taught by her were quickly caught up in her enthusiasm and passion for boating, knots and helping us perfect our skills.
Alice was the first mate for the Tall Ship Alma in the San Francisco Bay for over 20 years. For 25 years she was the Senior Instructor and Education Coordinator for the San Francisco Maritime National Park Association's “Age of Sail" programs. Alice was proud to say she worked with almost 90,000 children in elementary and middle school, teaching them many aspects of “the life of a sailor.”
When Alice came to teach knots at the Women’s Sailing Seminar, perhaps 10 years ago, we knew she was a keeper! She loved her involvement with the Seminar and taught hundreds of women knot skills, patiently and with humor. At the last WSS in September, we honored Alice with the first Woman of Valor certificate. Handing it to her was a special moment for us and, we hope, for her as well.
In addition to her involvement with WSS, Alice was also active with other aspects of Island Yacht Club. As Board Secretary, Alice always showed up with a deep desire to do the job right.
Near the end of her life we were able to raise almost $8,000 for expenses to allow her family to be able to travel home. Thank you to everyone who was able to help, and also to those of you who keep Alice's memory alive in your thoughts. She was a very special person indeed.
We will have an 8 bells ceremony for her in the future. Please reach out to IYC if you wish to send any kind words or well wishes to the family.

It is with a heavy heart that we forward the news that Larry Zarembinski passed away on January 11, 2024.
With permission from his daughters, we are sharing this news as Larry was an integral part of our community.
Larry served as our Race Chair last year, helping the club put on over 23 races. He volunteered on our Race Committee and over at St. Francis Yacht Club. In addition, he worked on our fleet boats and was a true blessing to IYC and other clubs around the Bay Area.
Larry loved sailing! He loved racing! He loved Island Yacht Club!
Larry had been ill for some time. His daughters mentioned that not long ago they were able to take him down to his boat one last time, which made him really happy.
Larry, we thank you for being a friend to many, for your contributions to Island Yacht Club over the years, and for being a part of the greater sailing community! Sail on....
