Blind Sailing Fundraiser Dinner August 24th
The Marin Sailing School will be holding a Fundraiser Dinner at Island Yacht Club on Sunday, August 24th in support of their team entry in this years US National Blind Sailing Championship. All IYC members, as well as anyone else interested in learning about the Blind Sailing Program, or supporting the team are encouraged to attend. Here are the details from Program Director & IYC member Danette Davis:
Hello Friends of the Marin Sailing School Program for the Blind!
Hey, it’s been way (way) too long since we’ve sent out an update on our program for blind and visually-impaired sailors. There’s lots happening for us right now, and guess what? It’s all crazy-good! Again!
As you may know, our story goes back to 2007 when our first visually-impaired (VI) students climbed aboard our Pearson 28 for a sailing lesson on San Francisco Bay. Well, it’s been a magical ride for all of us ever since. In that first year we taught 10 visually impaired students. We’ve managed to increase that number each year–this season we’re on track to teach over 90 visually-impaired sailors (we’re tying hard to break 100)! Alongside our growing recreational program we’ve sent racing teams to five United States National Blind Sailing Championships, to the 2009 World Blind Sailing World Championships, and so far we’ve hosted two regattas of our own (California Invitational Blind Sailing Regattas in 2010, 2012). Our racing team, California One, is now training for this September’s 2014 US National Blind Sailing Championships (to be held at Newport, RI).
Our work continues–as does our deep appreciation for the dozens of folks who’ve been carrying the load: our tireless volunteers, a cadre of skilled instructors, the dedicated staff and leadership at Treasure Island Sailing Center, our interns, and the kind members of the Island Yacht Club, our gracious hosts and guardian angels. All of these people, collectively, deserve credit for the success of our blind sailing program. Sighted and visually-impaired alike–all sailors with huge hearts.
And one more thing–our thanks go also to you. Nothing would happen without the wonderful support we receive during each of our fund raising campaigns. To that, we’re gathering (ok, we’re partying) at the Island Yacht Club on August 24, in support of our blind and visually-impaired sailors. The timing is such that it’s also a send-off to our racing team, California One, just before we leave for the US National Championships.
So, if you can come to the party (or you just want to support our blind sailors), please make an on-line donation to our program via PayPal of at least $40. (To do that, just visit our website at marinsailingschool.com You don’t need a PayPal account, just a credit card will do). When we see your donation come in we’ll send you all the details about the party, and the driving directions to the Island Yacht Club.
Thanks very much for your help, and thanks for your unwavering support and friendship. See you at the party on Aug 24!!
Fair winds, calm seas–and my warmest regards,
Director, Program for the Blind
