Our First Edition!

Category : News and Stories

In the December MAINSHEET, I told you about some upcoming changes in how IYC communicates with (and between) our members.  This blog post is the first example of what we’re working on.  My apologies for the long delay; I wasn’t sure whether to do this now or try and get in one more old-style newsletter, but the stars aligned and here we go!

We’re trying out WordPress as a platform on which to build the new www.IYC.org.  Although originally built for bloggers, open-source WordPress has evolved into quite a robust Web publishing system.  WordPress is provided free of charge by Bluehost (our Internet hosting provider), so it doesn’t cost IYC nickel more than we’re paying now.

Meanwhile, IYC’er Jeff Grudin is playing with ideas in Facebook.  The likely scenario is that any member with a FB account will be able to join a Facebook Group; that will enable you to post messages and photos, and view the contributions of others.  Heading out sailing this weekend and looking for crew?  Have a free weekend but no boat?  Connect up and have more fun with your friends at IYC by just throwing a quick post to our FB group.  (Watch for the FB link soon!)

Remember that our Flickr site already has hundreds of photos that you can view anytime!  Bookmark http://tinyurl.com/iycphotos and see some of the great stuff your Club has done.

Our online committee of Jeff, current Webmaster David Ross and member Chris Viaggi will be talking more as we plug away at his project.  Watch Kristen’s IYCee What’s Happening Emails too; as we get things in good enough shape to ask for comments and suggestions, we’ll put the links there for you.

Remember, this site is YOURS.  It exists to meet your needs, to make your membership in Island Yacht Club more rewarding and more fun.  PLEASE send your suggestions!  Email me anytime at dave@virtualameda.com.  (And once we get things set up a bit more, you’ll be able to post comments right here on the site as well.)
