WHY IYC in SL?

Why not?

SL is certainly not for everyone.  But lots of possibilities exist and it’s easy to give it a try:

  • Virtual sailing is fun. Things come at you very fast, and your reflexes have to be sharp as you watch you sail trim and wind direction.

  • You can sail, own, or even design and build the boat of your dreams. Whether it’s a dinghy, an America’s Cup catamaran, or a tall ship, you can buy or build just about any design you can think of.  Here’s How!

  • It never rains in Second Life. Every day is a great sailing day!  And a Race Director can create wind at any speed, from any direction, and change it at will.

  • A beginner can learn many concepts far better than in a book. SL boats behave like real ones do; you experience the affects of sail trim, direction and wind in real time.

  • Inworld clubs are filled with great people, just like RL clubs are! There’s just something about sailors, and that seems to extend out into the virtual waters as well. (Remember, those avatars are all real people, just like you.)

  • Full schedule of races, cruises and events. Clubs in SL are always doing something.  Races happen almost daily, and there are cruises to distant islands and special events like boat shows, showcasing the newest and most advanced digital vessels.

  • Club Promotion. For our club, there could be some real promotional value here, especially being so closely tied to the inworld Americas Cup and Vuitton Trophy projects. There are millions of real people in SL, and this is a way for them to find us.

  • New sailors! It’s easy to forget that just a tiny number of people around the world have the kind of access to sailing that we do in Alameda. But their experience in SL may draw them to the water when they can get there, and that expands the reach of our favorite sport.
